Huel hot & savoury is one of the latest additions to the Huel range. I have been using Huel for the last 4 years and I would now like to share my findings on this newer range of products.
What is Huel?
First off, let’s quickly cover Huel as a whole.
Huel is a company that provides nutritionally complete food in the shape of shakes, bars, and instant meals. Their meals are designed to be nutritionally complete, vegan, and quick & easy to make.
Huel is packed with the good stuff that your body needs: protein, carbs, fats, fibre and 26 vitamins. All this is provided in under 5-minutes.
Hot & Savoury is just one of the offerings from the Huel company. This was a later addition to their range and provides a hot instant meal alternative to their shakes.
Aside from Hot & Savoury, Huel is more famously known for its shakes. I have reviewed the Black Edition shakes here.
Huel Hot & Savoury Review
Now let’s get down to business – my review of Huel Hot & Savoury
Flavours
There are currently 10 flavours available: Pasta Bolognese, Mac & Cheeze, Cajun Pasta, Chick’n & Mushroom Pasta, Thai Green Curry, Mexican Chili, Korma, Tomato & Herb, Madras, and Sweet & Sour.
The Madras flavour is labelled with 3 chilis so be warned, and I’ve found the Mexican Chili (2 chilis) to have a kick to it.
The stand-out flavours for me are Mac & Cheeze and Chick’n & Mushroom. These are dishes I would enjoy normally so that plays a lot into why they are my favourite as they replicate the taste well.
Across the range, the meals do a good job of imitating a traditionally cooked meal with plenty of flavours packed in.
Value for money
Prices start at £2.66 per meal if you order a minimum of 3 bags, and can go down as low as £2.06 per meal if you bulk in buy and subscribe.
I believe the price is more than fair for what you are getting. ‘Fair’ is, of course, relative and you will need to make up your own mind. But consider the nutrients you would receive from a lunchtime sandwich compared to what you receive from a Hot & Savoury portion.
On top of this, we have the convenience of simply adding hot water to make a Hot & Savoury which is quicker and easier than making most other meals.
Further on top of this, it is hard to come across Huel that has gone off as it has a shelf life of a year – compare that to the lettuce in the fridge!
And you can get a further £10 off if you sign up with my referral link here. This link gives you £10 off your first order and gives me £10 off also. You also receive a free T-Shirt, pot, and scoop with your first order!
Ease of use
2 scoops into the free pot and fill with hot water to the fill line – what could be easier?
Sometimes time is just not on our side. And sometimes the thought of cooking a meal from scratch has us reaching for the phone to order a takeaway. This is where Huel comes to the rescue as it is so easy and quick to make.
Removing the excuses that I don’t have time and it’s too much effort has helped me turn around my eating habits in recent years.
Texture
The texture is where we find the main difference from a traditionally cooked meal. Being an instant meal, it is hard to replicate everything that a freshly cooked meal will provide.
Overall, Hot & Savoury does a good job of mimicking, but there are times when it does fall a little short. The biggest giveaway that you are eating an instant meal is the tiny pieces of pasta. They really are tiny.
I’ve found that if I don’t get the water to sauce mix quite right then the pasta can take longer to cook than the suggested 5 minutes. Although it can be a little annoying when I’m in a rush, it’s not a deal-breaker as I can simply put the lid back on and leave for an extra minute or two.
To cook quickly, there also aren’t any large chunks of food either. This may be a plus to many, who don’t like chunky vegetables, but it does give the game away that it is an instant meal at times.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Huel Hot & Savoury is a tasty, time-saving, and nutritionally packed hot meal. It is perfect for people who want to eat healthily but don’t necessarily always have time to prepare a healthy meal.
With so many flavours available there is likely to be at least one that you enjoy.
